In the hours before former president Lula turned himself in to federal
authorities, a huge crowd gathered around the building where he was held
up. They were there to show their support and to prevent the police from
entering. But reporters from major media also stayed away. They covered
the scene by helicopter. Since 2013, mainstream journalists have become
increasingly despised by the left and the right in Brazil even as media
consumption is soaring. While many are (rightly) indignant about
physical attacks, few are willing to consider why things have gotten so
bad and whether it’s time for journalists to rethink the way they
approach their jobs. At The Intercept Brasil, we are subject to the same
risks and concerns, but are trying to build trust with our audience in
new ways. One big difference: we want (some) people to hate us.
